Event description: On the 60th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty, a landmark achievement of science diplomacy that ensured Antarctica would be used only for peaceful and scientific purposes, join the Journal of Science Policy & Governance (JSPG) and GPS-STEM at UC Irvine for a workshop on “Celebrating Shared Global Goals in the Age of Science Diplomacy” covering international science diplomacy. The speakers will present short talks related to the topic of the event, followed by an opportunity to practice and discuss science diplomacy in breakout rooms.

The Journal of Science Policy & Governance (JSPG) and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society have launched a call for op-eds and policy position papers inviting students, post-docs, policy fellows, and early career researchers to consider ways we can re-envision STEM education and workforce development for the 21st Century.

As part of this partnership, JSPG and Sigma Xi will host a series of educational webinars led by experts from Advancing Research Impact in Society (ARIS), New America, and the Association of American Universities (AAU) to examine policy changes in STEM education and workforce development, and a policy writing workshop for op-eds and policy position papers to help prospective authors improve their submissions to the special issue.

This webinar series will engage thought leaders in the field to discuss the most important topics for the next generation to focus on, showcase impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the field, and design the future of this field from a policy standpoint, taking into account equity and inclusion, access to technology, and aligning training opportunities with workforce demands. 

​Each of these webinars will focus on a particular stage of STEM education and segment of the workforce impacted by the pandemic. These webinars will help inform and inspire potential authors with their writing for the special issue.

​WRITING WORKSHOP
This writing workshop will equip students, policy fellows, and early career researchers with the skills needed to write effective, innovative and actionable op-eds and policy position papers. 

The workshop will inform prospective authors on major policy issues and questions related to STEM education and workforce development, provide instruction on elements needed to construct op-eds and policy position papers, and provide opportunities to practice outlines for writing proposals in breakout rooms with reviewer feedback.

Description:

Supported by the Kavli Foundation, this webinar series is being organized to coincide with JSPG and AAAS’s joint call for policy position papers which will invite students, post-docs, policy fellows, and early career researchers to consider ways we can reimagine American science by building on and from Vannevar Bush’s Science: the Endless Frontier. These webinars will engage thought leaders from science policy to share their perspectives on where U.S. science policy could be enhanced across five thematic areas. 

Format:
There will be a total of 6 webinars for 75 minutes each, focusing on a major theme from the Endless Frontier. Following introductions and context setting, a panel of experts will discuss policy issues related to the webinar theme, followed by Q&A and group discussions with the audience.

Scientists and engineers are in a unique position to influence science policy through their technical expertise. Strong communication skills are essential to bridging the gap between science and society. Join the AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowships (STPF) program and the Journal of Science Policy and Governance (JSPG) for this web panel showcasing opportunities for early career researchers (ECRs) to get involved in science policy. The session will feature STPF fellows and JSPG board members who share lessons learned from their careers in science policy, including their entry point into science policy, fellowship experiences, and the variety of science policy careers beyond a fellowship. The web panel will also discuss skills that contributed to their success, and highlight JSPG as an avenue for publishing their studies, and for sharpening writing and editing skills in science policy.
