New York City, New York – The National Science Policy Network (NSPN), a US-based network of student-run science policy organizations, and the Journal of Science Policy & Governance (JSPG), an international peer-review publication managed by and for students and early career trainees, have joined forces to launch an international policy memo writing competition for early career scientists across the United States and around the world.
The objective of the partnership is to provide a collective challenge that catalyzes the engagement of science policy student organizations with local, state, federal and global policy issues at the intersection of science, technology, and innovation. The competition will encourage students and early-career scientists to contribute to current policy debate and the policymaking process.
In order to provide training resources in advance of the competition, NSPN organized a national policy memo-writing workshop in Washington, DC featuring speakers from science policy organizations DC, including the JSPG, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology and other science policy organizations.
The workshop recordings are posted on YouTube and the NSPN website for student science policy groups around the world. Submissions will be reviewed by the JSPG Editorial Board with monetary awards being given to three student science policy organizations who author the top three policy memos.
The organizations will leverage the award money to further catalyze the engagement of student and young scholars in science policy.
“Students and young scholars play an incredibly important role in local, state, federal and international science and technology policy from engagement with elections to technical contributions through writing and research. JSPG is pleased to be joining forces with NSPN to catalyze the next generation of policy leaders and help equip them with the skills needed to excel in a policy environment,” said Shalin Jyotishi, Chief Executive Officer of the JSPG.
“Scientists are recognizing that their responsibilities as citizens are not abdicated upon their first experiment at the lab bench. It is essential that in addition to a rigorous training in the sciences, those who are interested in leveraging their skills for the immediate betterment of their community are provided with the skill sets to do so. We are excited to launch a unique opportunity for scientists worldwide to practice and learn about a mode of policy communication, as well as promote policy engagement by all strata of the scientific community. ” said Avital Percher, National Chair of the NSPN.
The winning policy memos along with the proceedings of the NSPN workshop will be published in a special edition of the Journal of Science Policy & Governance during Summer 2019 and featured during the 2019 Annual National Science Policy Symposium in Fall 2019.
The competition was announced at the Annual Science Policy Symposium in New York City. Speaking on the competition:
