Washington, DC – The Journal of Science Policy and Governance (JSPG), a non-profit organization and international, interdisciplinary, and peer-reviewed publication based in the United States, has been expanding its partnerships efforts with organizations, networks and individuals active with students and early career researchers in science policy.

In November 2018 JSPG and the The National Science Policy Network (NSPN), a US-based non-profit that supports the growing network of student-run science policy organizations, partnered to launch an international policy memo writing competition for early career researchers worldwide. The objective of the partnership was to catalyze the engagement of students and young researchers in current policy debates around issues relating to science, technology, and innovation.

Submissions were reviewed by the JSPG Editorial Board with monetary awards being given to three student science policy organizations who author the top three policy memos. The prize money will be used to support and expand programming for the student organizations. Winners are from a number of universities, including:
  1. University of Pennsylvania, Penn Science Policy and Diplomacy Group: The Controlled Substances Act and Safe Consumption Facilities
  2. University of Pittsburgh, Pitt Science Policy Group: Federal Exemption of Cannabis as a Controlled Substance
  3. Emory University, Emory Science Advocacy Network: Hazardous PFAS Chemicals in Our Drinking Water
Honorable Mentions include:
  • UC Berkeley, Nuclear Policy Working Group: Decisions on the Next Generation NC3 Enterprise
  • Johns Hopkins University, Homewood SciPol: Baltimore Clean Air Act; the need for a new waste management system in Baltimore
  • Penn State, PSU SciPol: The Effects of Drilling the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania
The winning memos have been published on the JSPG website. Congratulations to all the winners and we look forward to continuing this competition in future years to engage more early career researchers in policy.
