JSPG Strengthens Commitment to International Outreach and Engagement

Washington, DC – The Journal of Science Policy and Governance (JSPG), a non-profit organization and international, interdisciplinary, and peer-reviewed publication based in the United States, is expanding its outreach and engagement efforts to students, policy fellows, and young scholars internationally.
Since 2011, JSPG has served as a professional development resource for early career scientists, engineers, and researchers to bolster their research and writing credentials on matters covering every aspect of science, technology, and innovation policy debate. JSPG’s policy-oriented articles spanning 13 volumes and 2 special editions have come from authors of all academic backgrounds ranging from the life sciences to engineering.
In an era of increasingly globalized science and policy interfaces, JSPG now seeks to increase its collaborations and partnerships with organizations, networks and individuals active with students and early career researchers in science policy, science communication, and science diplomacy outside of the United States.
Earlier this month at the 2018 Science Policy Symposium in New York City, JSPG and the National Science Policy Network, an alliance of student science policy organizations, announced an international policy memo writing competition to catalyze the interest and engagement of young scholars in science policy. Winners of the competition will be awarded cash prizes and eligible finalists will be published in a special issue of JSPG in summer 2019. This collaboration is one illustration of JSPG’s aim to serve as a resource for early career researchers worldwide.
JSPG’s new international outreach efforts will be supported by its existing team members and championed by two new positions:
Gary Kerr, Chief International and Operations Officer:
Over the course of a 7-year tenure with the journal, Gary has served as an Associate Editor, Assistant Editor-in-Chief, Editor-in-Chief and Senior Director of Operations and International Outreach. He has now been named JSPG’s first Chief International and Operations Officer. By day, Gary is a Lecturer at the Edinburgh Napier University in the United Kingdom, and an active consultant, speaker, researcher, and lecturer on science communication, engagement, and policy issues internationally. Gary will help lead the journal’s efforts to develop an international engagement strategy in collaboration with journal staff, editors, and partner.
Jean-Christophe (JC) Mauduit, Director of International Engagement
JC, who also previously served on the JSPG editorial board, has been named JSPG’s first Director of International Engagement. JC brings considerable experience and passion for science diplomacy and international science policy to JSPG’s outreach efforts. He is a Visiting Scholar at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Washington, DC and most recently served as Deputy Director of the Science Diplomacy Center at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University (Boston, Massachusetts). JC will help lead the journal’s efforts to engage organizations, individuals, and academic institutions active in international science policy as well as in science diplomacy.
