National Science Policy Network Launches 2020 Annual Sponsorship of JSPG

Washington, DC – The National Science Policy Network (NSPN) and the Journal of Science Policy & Governance (JSPG) will be joining forces in 2020 to enhance collective science policy initiatives for early career scientists and engineers. NSPN will be the official annual sponsor for JSPG in 2020, enabling the expansion of science policy advocacy and the generation of new opportunities for affiliates of both organizations to amplify the voices of science as the 2020 U.S. election draws near.

Through NSPN’s sponsorship, JSPG will be able to increase opportunities for NSPN’s 400+ members and other science policy enthusiasts to put their op-eds, policy memos, and science policy research articles through the journal’s peer-review process and thus contribute to a growing, open-access database of science policy publications and resources.
“We at JSPG are excited for NSPN’s sponsorship of the journal this year and the opportunities it provides in continuing to develop networks of science and technology policy thinkers, researchers, and practitioners,” said Christian Ross, JSPG’s Editor-In-Chief. “JSPG and NSPN have similar missions, and we are eager to partner in our shared commitment to rigorous, open-access science and technology policy scholarship. We are especially looking forward to our joint Policy Memo Competition with NSPN this spring, which provides a venue for early career researchers to apply their expertise to policy contexts ‘outside the lab.’”
As organizations founded by and for early career scientists and engineers, both NSPN and JSPG are committed to growing their capacity to support the nationwide science policy efforts of early career scientists and to make science policy information openly accessible, credible, and comprehensible. The National Science Policy Network represents a coalition of early career science policy, advocacy, and diplomacy groups distributed across the United States, while the Journal of Science Policy & Governance provides an established, international, open-access peer-reviewed platform for early career scientists to share ideas in science and technology policy.

The growth and accomplishments of our members who engaged in the 2019 Policy Memo Competition are especially inspiring, and we are excited to see where this second annual collaboration will lead us.”

The annual International Science Policy Memo Competition launched in 2018 to provide training and practice in policy memo writing, a distinct style that requires distilling complex science and technology concepts. Leading up to the April 1 submission deadline, early career scientists and engineers are working in groups of three or more to write memos that convey considerations, weigh implications, and develop recommendations for action on a specific science policy issue. This year, NSPN members are also preparing white papers to be submitted to JSPG’s standard issue as a part of the 2020 Election Initiative, which provides several tracks for engagement, outreach, and advocacy on critical science and technology policy topics that are addressed in the 2020 U.S. election cycle, and is supported by a grant from Schmidt Futures.
“The breadth and depth of science and technology policy issues have grown significantly in recent years,” said Deborah Stine, who serves on the JSPG Governing Board and previously served as the Executive Director of the White House President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. “This partnership between JSPG and NSPN paves the way for more students and early career researchers to come together and produce compelling policy solutions for our most pressing challenges.”
