JSPG and UK Science and Innovation Network Release Special Issue on Climate Change Solutions Ahead of COP26

​Washington, DC (June 21, 2021) – The Journal of Science Policy & Governance (JSPG) is proud to announce the release of the Special Issue on Climate Change Solutions, which was produced in collaboration with the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s Science and Innovation Network (UK SIN) in advance of the 2021 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP26), taking place in Glasgow, Scotland from November 1-12, 2021.

Established in 1995, the Conference of Parties (COP) is the decision-making body responsible for monitoring and reviewing the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. COP26 will be a pivotal conference for countries to finalize agreement on implementation of the Paris Agreement, and to come forward with more ambitious pledges on climate mitigation, adaptation and finance.
 
The call for papers focused on three of the UK’s priority areas for COP26: Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change, The Transition to Clean Energy-Phasing Out Coal Power and Nature-Based Solutions to Climate Change. Students, post-docs, early career researchers and young professionals were encouraged to consider how public policies or governance structures could address global climate change via these lenses.

If we are to succeed in tackling the challenges of the climate emergency, bold and decisive policy-making, grounded in science, will be more important than ever before,” said Dame Karen Pierce DCMG, Her Majesty's Ambassador to the United States of America. “I offer my congratulations to the authors for their contributions to the fight against climate change, and my thanks to the editors and staff of the JSPG for enabling the next generation of STEM leaders to make their voices heard.

​Given the focus on climate change solutions to critical threats facing our planet, “The new issue covers many topics from climate emergency and risk, to strategies for climate change mitigation and climate resilience, as well as touches upon effects on vulnerable communities that lends itself to improved climate action and justice, including an equitable clean energy transition, both in the U.S. and globally,” said JSPG’s Assistant Editor-in-Chief for Special Issues, Madeleine Jennewein.

The authors of three outstanding publications in this issue, as selected by an expert review committee, will be invited to present their work to leaders from the British Embassy and attend a forum about implementing policy solutions and engaging young people. The winning publications are:

• Best Practices for an Equitable Clean Energy Transition: A Toolkit for U.S. States
• The Power of Customer Choice in Energy: A California Case Study in Accelerating Clean Energy Transition 
• Removing Barriers and Creating Opportunities for Climate-Resilient Agriculture by Optimizing Federal Crop Insurance

“Climate issues will continue to impact our planet in a significantly detrimental fashion in the next decade unless we act now. All over the world, young people are working to combat climate change in novel ways, including climate justice, inequality, and other societal issues intimately connected to climate change,” said Adriana Bankston, JSPG’s Chief Executive Officer. “These continued impacts on our planet and society have highlighted the need for bold, innovative, and entrepreneurial climate change solutions worldwide. JSPG is proud to partner with UK SIN on this issue and hope to have inspired the next generation to continue working towards a better future.”
